wheres the best place to get lead for moulds?

#1 Post by jhcabs »

Thinking of making my own leads for rough ground fishing. never bought lead before though.

Wheres the best places to find/buy lead and is there any good step by step instructions on the making them up?

Thanks

I'm assuming a granny flat in the city centre is not a great place to boil lead in the kitchen? ;)

Would a pot on a gas bbq do the trick? It looks like a great way to save money but envolves buying quite a lot of components to do it right

Not recommend you have to get rid of the sulfuric acid first and then you have to extract the lead too messy and dangerous , clean lead is your only man, I think john1 had a post up about the dangers

using old lead thats being lying around ,or lead flashing that is folded over can produce some nasty results...long story short....molten lead and water /moisture dont mix...picture this ,sunny day ,out the back, melt the lead, water in lead ,next minute molten lead spluttering all over the shop...chaos! not worth all the hassle, just buy them, whats the worst that can happen ? 8) 8) 8)

Don't go near car batterys if you've any sense they are full of sulphuric acid. Sulphuric acid is very corrosive and can burn or blind you at worst be careful. At best your clothes will fall apart when it comes in contact with the acid. Not good advice!!!!!

I never ment for him to get batterys that still have liquid in them. Years ago I used to go the scrap yard and get the cells from the broken batts, if there was liquid in them Id stay away.

A local agri-business or centre, hardware, building supplies store would have them. Try not to order outside Ireland on the Internet or the shipping will be insane for obvious reasons! One metric roll of lead equates to but about 2200 +\- 50 ounces. The roll costs about €100 but at 20c an ounce (tackle shops) it's worth almost €500!
A bad days fishing is still better then a good day at the office.

Instead of buying moulds just fill a bucket with sand, pack it down and stick your thumb into it, wiggle it around and you should get between 4-8 ounces depending how big you make it!
My philosophy is it doesn't need to be pretty just needs to sink. :D

Wouldn't the sand have to be at least damp to keep a hole in it ? Even if not dangerous doesn't this method give a very abrasive finish which can cut through line ?
I am not trying to find fault with your recommendation . Have just started making my own leads and not found it as easy as I had imagined ...... eg : using a gas ring in the open air is only fine so long as there is absolutely no draft (!) . Commercial moulds have to be hot when you pour in the lead or it solidifies before it fills the chamber . Old lead is full of crap which floats on the molten stuff and has to be scooped off before you can pour . I am sure all of my comments will have been made elsewhere . .... I should be reading up on those links instead of typing this !
Good luck

Interesting topic! I have thought about making my own leads before too but I think il give it a miss. Seems like a lot of hassle and very dangerous!

I was in Balscadden in Howth the other day (first time-never again!!!) and some guys there had made DIY weights using a coke cans full of stones! No wonder there were no fish around!
