Dublin Bay Specimen Pouting 23/5/2015.

#1 Post by JOHN1 »

Crew:two

Duration:9 hours

Tide: yes

Weather: not what they said

Bait:rag mack squid crab herring

Rigs:various

Results: 8 species. POUTING, pollack, codling, dab, lsd, poorcod, ballan wrasse, grey gurnard.
with the forecast looking good earlier on in the week a plan was hatched to hit an off shore wreck that is only possible when weather is perfect, off we went with early enough start to make the most of it, after a good steam out we anchor into the wreck, within minutes i had the first fish a small pollack good to know at least something was there. this was the stamp of fish for most of the day as the tide picked up it was time for me to change tac and sesarch the grounds around the wreck this resulted in a good few dabs with dogs and grey gurnards also making an apperance. as the tide slackened later in the day it was possible to fish into the structure again resulting in codling poorcod and ballan wrasse with some big pouting starting to make up the best of it some of the pouting were fairly decent or so i taught until i got a good fish that made a great account of itself, when i seen this come to the surface i knew it was a bit special, checked the required specimen weight that said 3lb was required i had a feeling this was going to come close so into the bucket it went with a couple of the other ones that were kept because they were suffering with the bends and experiance of them from this deep wreck is that most become seagull food anyway.weighed as soon as i got home it made the grade so off to a local shop to have it weighed on certafied scales as mine is out of cert simply because i dont feel like paying to have something done that used to be free  not long after getting this fish i happened to look up towards bow and noticed a container ship heading straight for us  lines in as quick as we could engine started and me just about to drop the anchor the ship changed course about 250m away from us, this was as close to a brown under pants experiance i want to get, i also spotted a minkey whale close to the boat but this time it didnt stick around for a photo,we had to get off the mark earlier than expected as the winds got up and made the trip home a bit uncomfortable, all in all a great days fishing for myself as its not often you hear of a specimen pouting from Dublin :D :D  i will try add a couple more photos later.

Nice going John1, always good to get a specimen. Interesting to read that it gave a good account of itself, I always think of pouting as all bite and no fight!

all fight when you get a decent one, I was fishing with a 6lb class rod with 20lb braid on a fixed spool so no matter what you are fishing for if you scale down you will get best from it, now that's within reason ofcource, there are some that have started to fish for tope using a fly rod, now that isn't what I'm talking about as I wouldn't agree with this approach as it just prolongs the stress that the fish is under, scale down according to the quarry size to get good sport aswell as keeping the welfare of the fish Under control, well that's my opinion anyway.
