Razor Fish for bait
Used it recently as I had nothing else, I didn't have a single fish on it.
Waste of time in my opinion.

Re: Razor Fish for bait
i used it a few times and never got anything on it as well,i was having a chat with the friend from the aquarium and he said that using a bait that is not in the area you are fishing in might not work too well, there is a beach near me that has a razor bed on it and i have never caught a fish from the beach i must try the razor there to see if there is any truth in what he said

Re: Razor Fish for bait
Up until last Winter I never rated Razor as a bait but I've seen Codling take em down in Youghal and Bass take them in Wexford.
They wouldn't be the first bait I'd put out, but trying Razor when feck all else is working does increase your options.

Re: Razor Fish for bait
I've been using it lately too and no joy, not even the cod are interested. But i'd imagine the areas where they are commonly found it should catch for ya. I've heard of 1 or 2 beaches in the Cork area where they work well for bass.

Re: Razor Fish for bait
I found that razor has out fished crap for bass on numerous occasions. Have caught bass on beaches in west & east cork only bait I will use now for bass. I have fished 2 rods with forest crab on one rod & frozen razor on the other result 3 bass on the razor & not a bite on the crab.

Re: Razor Fish for bait
Ha ha, have never used crap!! But seriously, have had 2x 1kg flounder and plenty of bass on razor! To be fair though, they are found in abundance in the area!

Re: Razor Fish for bait
I have found razor a great bait. I have had plenty of bass with it from the East Cork and West Waterford beaches and last year my largest cod from Youghal (6.5 lbs) was on razor. Although not a bait I would regularly use or recommend for Youghal as the crabs will have it off the hook in minutes, I only used it that time as I was low on crab.
It is often recommended as a good bait for bass in a big surf and I have had bass on it in such conditions but one of my best sessions with a load a bass a few years ago was in calm conditions with just a weak surf, the razor was barely in the water before it was snatched by a bass cast after cast.
It seems to work well after been thawed out and refrozen a number of times when it is very strongly smelling.
Apart from bass and cod I have caught plenty of flounder with it, dogfish, eels, coalfish, rocklings and a few ray.
Razor/lug cocktails are a particularly effective bass bait.

Re: Razor Fish for bait
An excellent cocktail bait to bulk out lug/rag baits, try blanching, then use plenty of bait elastic. Top codling bait here, I`ve caught bass, codling and flats over with you in Wexford, Waterford and Cork

Re: Razor Fish for bait
As said above I've had bass and codling on it but two species for me that it stuck out as a good bait are plaice in small strips and I've had four Huss in the summer and two of them were caught on big razor fish and squid they seem to really like that cocktail so in my experience it's far from a worthless bait ya just need to experiment with it under different conditions and you would be surprised how many different species are partial to a bit of razor
