Roach !

This might raise a few eyebrows..... has any body heard of freshwater roach, being used as bait? I ,read it in a book titled the sea angler in Ireland, published in 1991.It states that Lugworm and roach are standard baits for east coast anglers !.....wtf

Roach are a viable bait. Last week I was talking to a very well known Irish specimen hunter who told me of a catch and also showed me the picture of a 9lb Cod taken on a Roach :) If you can catch em on bits of luminous plastic you can catch them on deadbaits.

The book doesnt elaborate about how to use them, just got the impression that they were used to tip or use chunks,
no mention of deadbaiting.asked a few "oldtimers about it ,they're still lookin at me  tried it a few times after....no joy.

Fish it whole, run a plastic boom onto some 60lb shockleader, attach a swivel next to the boom, 30lb amnesia or fluorocarbon as your hook length and a size 3/0 (minimum) circle hook through the fishes head. You can either fish it on the drift over wrecks etc or you can fish it at anchor or you can fish it as you would a perk eg sink it to the bottom and then vary the speed of your retrieve till you find what the fish want.

I wouldnt recommend fishing pieces of it, its not the most oily fish really so your scent trail is gonna be minimal compared to other fish like mack or bluey. It will catch fish dude BUT that doesnt mean its the best bait to be fishing!! There are far more reliable baits to fish!

When I lived in Cardiff there was a lad who had a few big bass with at least one double figure fish using roach just inside the Sea Gates on the barrage. I am not sure if the salt water stuns the fresh water fish or if the roach are used to the salinity and the bass just ambushed them around the moorings. He started using the roach after gutting a squid caught bass and finding it full of small coarse fish.
The Truth is often stumbled upon by men, most of whom pick themselves up and hurry along as if nothing ever happened.
