Fixed spool advice

#1 Post by eddyfletch »

So guys its shopping time

I am looking to get a new fixed spool in the next week or so before i do id like to get some suggestions which to buy.

I generally fish mixed / rough ground / estuaries and beaches and have around budget of 120 to 140 euro to spend.

I normally load it with 20/25lb line depending on what im fishing for.

So which reel would be the best to buy theres alot of options from

Okuma Trio Rex Salt-TXS-60 FD Reel

Daiwa windcast

Penn Affinity LC Series

Shimano Ultegra XSC Reel

or if you have any other suggestions ?

Hi Eddie firstly I would stay away from the Shimano XSC I had one about this time last year. within a few weeks of having it either the bail came down mid cast or (i didnt lift it) and it made sh1t of the worm gear that brought the spool up and down. Plus it felt very light and not very sturdy

I have since moved to the Penn affinity 8000 and like it so much i fitted both rods with them. really strong well built reel and great for casting. cheapest i seen them was on amazon

I wouldnt be listening to staying away from ultrgras they are possibly 1 of the best fixed spools out there

If you fish proper rough ground get a penn spin fisher lc 7000 there a tank, when you go rough ground with fixed spools they become heavier etc

Check out murtackle for shimano reels cheapest iv found

I would get the shimano ultegra xsc while there going cheap. Serious reels that will handle both light and heavy fishing. A lad in england landed a 208lb skate on one of them.

I'm really surprised with paddy oo2s experience these reels seem highly regarded by many.

I also own an affinity lc. Decent reels.

But The shimano is superior IMO. Far smoother, and suited to both rough ground and clean ground using heavy or light leads. Would go near rough stuff with affinity. From research online there a lot of talk of the gears getting stripped when used
Over heavy ground.

Mur tackle as ste c said. Prices are great

Almost the same reel as Affinity. Affinity has few more ball bearings and a titanium worm shaft..

Ultegras are not rough ground reels they can be used for it but wont last too long

Penn affinity are a work horse had these when were first released years ago and stayed strong

The penn spinfisher are out and out tanks

The best of the lot for casting etc and all rounder are the ultegras few diff models to choose from and very cheap from murtackle

I have the Affinity 7000 LTD Live liner (don't know how different it is to the LC) and it's a great reel, has never failed me so far and is great to use.
Kept in good condition they seem like they would last forever.
Brilliant reel, I've also heard lots of good comments about the Ultegra.
