Sea trout license

#1 Post by freedom1916 »

This question has probably been asked to death at this stage but here it goes.

I intend on fishing an estuary for sea trout where it is catch and release only.

As it is catch and release only I don't see the point in buying a license as my understanding is you can only be prosecuted for taking a trout not for targeting them.

I have asked IFI but surprisingly they aren't 100% on this .

Does anyone know what the actual rule is. District license is 56 Euro which I'd prefer to spend in a local tackle shop.

Thank You.

Your understanding is wrong. If you intend to target ST then you need a licence. Simple as that.

The law is silent on where you need a licence, just that you need a licence to fish for salmon or ST.

Of course, its an easy catch for the inspectors to get someone with dead ST on their possession, but they don't need that to form the opinion, act on their opinion, confiscate gear, issue fixed penalty tickets or take it to court where you can argue the toss in front of the judge.

" Exhibit A:, A post placed on the website Sea Angling Ireland by the accused. The Court will see it was the clear intention of the accused to target the specified species in clear contravention of the Law. It is my application that the accused be found guilty and hung from his own fishing line."

I'm only day dreaming.
