Lumsdin's Bay, Hook Peninsula

Hey all, I was looking at a map of Wexford and as I scanned the hook peninsula I found a small hidden bay called Lumsdin's Bay, which is home to two beaches. It is very hidden, not signposted and it's situated at the end of what looks like a farmer's lane. Does it look good to fish?

Forgot to mention that I went down there today - there's a lot of rocks around it and it looks like the beach would be covered at high tide. The link brings you to some pics and the location of this hidden beach.

Haha, exactly! Very nice beach, clean and not that big! Should I 'bottom fish' or spin? I'm not very knowledgeable with these fishing terms!

Start with bottom fishing (a variety of baits on a three hook paternoster or flapper rig) after a survey at low water to see where there are any gulleys or fishing holding / channelling marks or terrain. Even the scour (depression) around a single rock can create a spot in which a predatory fish will wait. Very small variations on a beach will often determine where fish will run or lie. This will also give you an idea on where it is safe to wade and to where to cast lures and/or baits.

Take a look at the tide as it comes in and where and how the waves fall, and if there are any rips (currents from the backwash of waves that run under the incoming waves and make the "bounce". Waves fall when they hit rocks or shallower ground. Where waves do not fall, the water is deeper and the sea bed smoother.

Beaches often fish differently between day and night.
Some marks are best fished at low water, some are best fished at high water.

It is all a question of trying different things over a period of time before you get it right. We fished two beaches in Mayo in the last month which are effectively side by side - one threw up only flatties during the day and night, the other threw up only whiting but only at night.

Thanks lad, will try this as soon as I can get down there. Was thinking mack, lug and crab as bait. Just have to plan it out.

I'd always have a peek on google maps too as in shallow water itll give you a pretty good idea of how bottom profile looks

If this is the spot it looks a bit rocky outside the low water mark

I fished it one day a few years back with plugs and s.p had a few takes but no hook ups all along the left hand were the gullys and rockey out crops are looks great for bass i never fished the beach but there was a load of dryed up crab legs in one spot telling me someone was bait fishing for bass so give it a go and best of luck

Thanks, so you reckon bottom fishing or spinning to the left at the rocks. I don't spin (as of yet, still new to fishing) but I have a few crab in the freezer so I'll throw a few out there once I get some free time.

The ground on the left might be a bit snaggy for bait fishing but the beach would be worth a go on a rising tide i reckon and if u do go down lure fishing shallow diving plugs would be best

Ok, what bait do you reckon? Beaches like this need a good scout around. There's a few small coves further north so I'll see if there's access to them, I like this area, apart from the tragedy that took place.

All depends on what you are after but lug,rag,and crab be a good start and if u do get into the lure fishing the rock marks to the left of the lighthouse offer some good pollock and wrass fishing but only in calm conditions

The info given is just a guide as to what you might catch but i think we have all being guilty of looking at prints like that best thing to do is give a mark ago and find out for yourself and dont give up if you dont catch try different tides and marks to c what works best for u after all its called fishing not catching

Are the tide guides correct? I'm in the early stage of fishing where a single fish will do me fine, so I just need to know when to go.

That area would not be my strong point as some beaches fish better on a rise while some on the drop maybe someone else can put u straight around area but i generally like to fish a rising tide into dark there are plenty of great tide apps for the phone that are pretty spot on with tides times i find u.k tides the best of the lot or tides near me is ok aswell
