Greystones beaches/ towards Wicklow

Hi Anybody been fishing Greystones beaches recently. Im from Belfast so would appreciate any feedback on Greystones or beaches towards Wicklow, all I want to know if there are fish being caught before I drive down there. I drove to Portmarnock last night fished up to high tide and down again and not a thing first time fishing there quite shallow beach.

We had a club competition set for the south beach arklow on the 2 january, as we came over the bridge in arklow we could the river was in flood the strange thing was that at the bridge we could see waves coming up the river from the open sea, when we got down to the car park there was no beach we could fish from as the rollers were coming right up to and over the rocks and into the car park.
So we was decided to moved the competition to 5 mile point, there was problem with this venue, there was a nice sea not to big and there was or no weed on the beach.
The competition started at 3.30 i was looking for a nice cod so on my first cast i had lug on the bottom hook mussell on the middle and sandeel on the top hook and right from the first cast there was small whiting and small codling on every cast size from 18cm - 28cm
As the the light started to fade whiting came on the feed big time, with three whiting every cast then the dogs stared to feed, at one stage i landed 4 fish on three hooks 1 dog and 2 whiting and another dog holding onto the smaller whiting,the dog holding onto the whiting did not count as he was not hooked.
Half was through the competition i stated to fish 3 sandeels and after about 10 minutes i landed 3 dogs, the following cast 3 whiting and so it went on till the last cast.
the competition was over at 8.30, the winner had 39 fish which included 16 dogs for 1287 points second had 38 fish 1131 points and third had 29 fish 943 points

Cheers Donal, I havent really used SAI as I'm normally on WSF with the lads there about posts in N.Ireland. Im wanting to try down east coast as theres not much going on at Antrim coast and weed was a big problem on an outing we all had after Christmas. I thought I would try Portmarnock but it was really shallow I was hitting about 150yds and the big lug baits did come back stripped at times.

Im gonna give greystones north beach a go very soon not sure if any part of the beach is fishable as the tide comes right back to the cliff edge on some parts of it will have to suss it out

If portmarnock wasn't producing....donabate and portrane only a short drive, and more depth close in. Have a eyeball on googlearth, you were next door to the two of them

Fished greystones just behind the rail station 3 days ago. Had a few cod on mackeral, nothing over 35cm mind, whiting aplenty

Cheers Kgarr I appreciate your feedback, I have never caught many cod and certainly none near 35cm so I would be happy with that, all my angling is catch and release anyway I just like to set targets and species hunt. So where can I park is it carpark at marine road?

You can park in the station or on the road, it's 3 quid 12-18.00 and free i think outside of that, mack was the best bait on the day, outfished crab!

Cheers Kgarr Im going to fish it on Monday and see what its like, hopefully get a few fish for my travels, I have lug in the freezer but I will bring some Mack also. Any Cod I have caught have been mostly on Mack also, I have taken a few on Lug.

Thanks to everyone for their advice headed to Greystones last night got down there for about 1830 and there were a few Anglers standing about and they said there was a comp on so I headed down and fished to the left of the steps, Wasnt bad night slight wind now and again but was dry, I had 3 or 4 Dogs, alot of pin Whiting and a Flounder when I decided to cast close in at the end as I was firing both rods out to max the whole night, No Cod but at least I caught a few fish for my journey. Thought I wasnt going to get home as the top 2 sections of my Penn rampage had jammed together and I was pulling and hauling and thought how to hell am I getting this in the car at like 12ft long but I just about managed.

great tip - same thing happened me before with a cheap Ron thompson rod.. ended up putting it through a refuse bin and pulling it against the side of it. wrecked the grip but i managed to get it apart

Yes lads good to get a few fish and all released again, got the two sections apart, my Mrs and I did the cross over technique and it came of easily that way, I might sand it slightly I have 2 Penn Rampage surf rods and the first wasnt tight at all but others have reported theirs being tight also.

I will continue to try the east coast marks, 2 hour drive isnt soo bad every couple of weeks lol

id be wary of sanding it - if you like the rod and plan to use it for a good while, they tend to ease a bit with wear and tear

the other way of getting loose is a killer - especially if casting hard

A ptfe lubricant as recommended on the century website works very well on any stiff or swollen joints.Also wiping any dirt or grime from both sections helps as well.When the rod spigots wear down pencil,candle wax or a few sprays of clear car laquer spray to rebuild up the joint works well.
