Fish ID

Hi All,

I was out collecting crab this morning and kept on finding loads of the sand eel like fish in the attached photo. could anybody let me know what they are and more importantly are they any good for using as bait??

Codling, Whiting

2017 Species:
Mackerel, Dog Fish, Whiting, 3 bearded rockling

2016 Species:
Pouting, Cod, Coalfish, LSD, macks, pollock, dogfish, Bass, Eel, Garfish, Ling, conger, yellow fin tuna, Skipjack Tuna, parrot fish, Trigger fish, Scad, Conger, whiting

2015 species:

Butterfish!

Never used one as bait but i have been bitten by one!

It's a butterfish common enough when I'm getting peelers too

thanks lads. I tossed a couple into the bag along with the crabs so as long as there not torn apart by the crabs ill give them a shot and let you know how i get on!

It's called a Gunnel ... But butterfish is what it's known as among most
species '09 - (42)

specimens 09 - twait shad 1.22kg , 3 beard rockling 2lb 6oz , whiting 3lb .

Butterfish or Rock gunnel either will do.
Species Target (1) Anything will be a Bonus.

yup butter fish you know why when u try to catch them or pick them up tryed them as live bait with buddy under float last resort as bait
