Hi I wonder do people here eat what they catch or release them ?
Would you release one type if fish over another ?

Re: Eating what you catch
put them all back - bar a few that are terribly hooked in the year - rare to catch one a decent size and usually happy enough to have caught it, i put it back so the karma police will look favourably on me for next time!
mind you there was an article on the bass tagging, where even though a bass was p!ss!n blood when they put it back it still survived and its signal picked up the next year!

Re: Eating what you catch
Although I'm not against people keeping something for supper, I just don't see the need.
House full of food at home, put them back and let your kids catch them someday.
Just to reiterate though, there's nothing wrong with keeping the odd one for the table., it's just not for me.

Re: Eating what you catch
I fish primarily for sport, however, I really enjoy eating super fresh fish, so from time to time I'll take home just enough fish to eat that day, or the following day. I see no point in filling a freezer. If I'm fishing somewhere that I'm likely to catch some food fish, I'll bring along a cool box with some ice, and anything I'm keeping goes straight from the sea, into the ice. I smoke Mackerel and herring, and amongst my favourite fish to keep are Ling, Turbot, Haddock, Whiting, Cod, Plaice and Gurnard. Countless times I've witnessed people stepping off charter boats with black sacks full of fish, and this sort of carry on I find repulsive & unnecessary.

Re: Eating what you catch
I take home Mackerel for the table and the odd few seed Whiting to keep the dog healthy and any fish that are badly hooked and won't survive; everything else goes back.

Re: Eating what you catch
The way I see it is if you've put in enough time and effort you deserve the additional reward of a lovely fresh fish dinner. God knows its rare enough to catch something worth keeping, particularly on the East coast.
I don't take to give to friends or family just for myself. The truth is if everyone in Ireland fished and kept their catch it would not have anywhere near the impact that all the commercial fishing operations have!

I have fished for all sorts for 60 years and have never eaten a fish of any kind - caught by me or otherwise.

Re: Eating what you catch
Keep most except juveniles. Have a nice chest freezer full.
I haven't bought fish from a shop or restaurant in years.
Those that fish for sport and look down on those getting off charters with black bags, do you eat fish in a restaurant or buy it in a fishmonger.... This is far worse imo

Re: Eating what you catch
i normally put 95-100% back when im fishing a local river or shore. even a big trout that puts up a good fight because id like to see someone else have the fight i did. but if afew of us where away for the weekend fishing id keep one or two more cause we be camping and cant beat a fresh fish cooked on a fire. but at the end of the day its all about the sport and excitement of catching a fish
