I'm searching new marks along the west for the last while and these feckers are turning up everywhere

Re: How to avoid doggies
Hi rob there is not a lot can be done to avoid them u can try fish through them or try fishing in a bit closer , they are hungry feckers I got them on mini baits and on full mack when fishing for tope

I think it's a case of trial and error to find witch marks hold less dogs, as regards bait iv yet to fine one that dogs don't take

Re: How to avoid doggies
I actually did a little experimenting with different baits on the wicklow coast which seems to be a mecca for them in an attempt to avoid them while flatfish and hound fishing and found that the main baits to attract them is obviously 1. Fish or sandeel 2. Ragworm 3.crab but i also found that bits tipped with mussel didn't seem as appealing to them especially lug tipped with mussel i almost got no attention at all usin this combo for plaice while other baits mentioned were bein lashed out of it by them .... So in not sayin its an absolute cure but its worth a try ...

Re: How to avoid doggies
When the dogs are feeding hard when fishing for ray around Wicklow I would use hole squid the dogs will still take it but not as fast as they would a Sandeel giving the ray some time to find the bait

Re: How to avoid doggies
I find if you are fishing for small things you just cant avoid them. They wont go for mussell as quick tho but they will still take it. The best way to avoid them is if you are using giant hooks and giant bait

Re: How to avoid doggies
That's interesting - a few years ago I fished a small sandy cove along a long stretch of rocky coastline and was plagued with dogs. I was getting them within 5-10 minutes of the bait hitting the water on every cast using crab, lug, razor and lug/razor cocktails. I had some mussels and tried that on one of the rods - I didn't get another dogfish on that rod afterwards - mind you I didn't have a bite of any sort on it. I never fished that mark again.sea serpant wrote:but i also found that bits tipped with mussel didn't seem as appealing to them

Re: How to avoid doggies
I was fishing down in Sneem last summer and the man fishing next to me had 2 on the float using mackerel strips, Im guessing he was dragging his baits along the bottom , I ve had a few nights down in Ballycotton pulling in doggie after doggie, frustrating but sometimes you can pull in the odd huss which isnt to bad, i'd love to catch them more often.Hugo wrote:Richie07 wrote:Best way to avoid them is to go lure fishing... or float fishing maybe? Re: How to avoid doggies
Bit of an update
Fished Cleggan last sun
If anyone knows it the place is usually full of those buggers
I used my good rod with the usual 3 hook flapper
And floated the other one
Same bait ( all I had left ). Sandeel with Mack strip on the end
The flappers produced just the one dog but the two whiting came on the float
So it's a kinda result
I'd like to see a few more dogs feeding and try the same again to see if I cAn avoid the pups .
Thanks for all the bits of info
