What's the best hound hook?
I've been trying a few different hooks for hounds and can't make my mind up as to the best.had the best look with a 5/0 o shaughnessy as I think the hook point was always clear.I missed a huge whollop last week on a 3/0 sakuma which is still annoying me.has anyone found a hook they feel is consistent for hounds.any input appreciated.

Re: What's the best hound hook?
I use a penel setup with the bottom hook a 3/0 kamasan uptide or owner cutting point and the top a size 1/0 owner short shank. I have found recently a lot of the hounds are hooked on the top hook.

I usually use Sakuma 545 Manta Extra hooks, and depending on what size of fish are in front of u depends on the size of hook, all rounder would be 3/0 for me!

Re: What's the best hound hook?
What kind of ground are you fishing over and what size of bait? I fish for them in South Wales over really snaggy ledges. We use a single 3/0 usually a varivas salt water champion. We dont use the strongest hooks as sometimes it helps to be able to bend a hook out of a snag.
I'm not afraid to use big hooks but 5/0 sound large for a hound targeted with a crab bait, just my personal opinion though. I generally find the give a very aggressive take and most often hook themselves.

Re: What's the best hound hook?
Depends on the ground, but I usually fish for them on beach marks with 3 hook clipped with b940's size 2's or 1's nothing fancy and there's the chance of other species if the hounds are slow :p

Re: What's the best hound hook?
very sharp ones! its as much to do with what way you load them as it is the size ,binding the crab tight so it wont slip down the hook is important but you dont want to sqeeze the bejasus out of it either or it will loose its scent as soon as it hits the sea, your rig enters the water a very high speed and any bait not held in place is going to cover your hookpoint ,prob giving you less than a 30% chance of a hookup. i must take a few pics of how i and other lads present crab baits on different hooks and pennels and put them up ,they say a picture says a thousand words

Re: What's the best hound hook?
Having my first experience of a belter of a hound last summer im makin a trip up country again from down south
and as a matter of interest rodger, down here in cod county
i use stuffed whole squid baits with crab and its very effective for cod, for me anyway, do the hounds like a bit of squid up ur neck of the woods?
