Eddie Cull & Emmet Naughton

#1 Post by wreckfish »

Anyone know if these Irish record holders, Emmet Naughton - Bass & Painted Ray and Eddie Cull - Black Sole & Plaice were club anglers?
Entries now open for the All Ireland Shore Cod Championships on November 29th hosted by Sea Angling Ireland SAC

Doesn't Eddie Cull have the painted ray record. The local legend is that Eddie was fishing a competition on Garryvoe. He came straight from work, sign in for the comp, set up his gear, and just quickly nipped home for a quick bite to eat. When he came back he had two painted ray on; the record fish and another which was also a specimen. Beachbuddy might be able to clarify this   .

Close but no cigar Pat  ,you forgot that he had no bait and borrowed a few squid from the other competitors even heard one of those competitors may have been our own Sir Dominator,he will clarify all when he comes along.Pat legend has it that some of his record fish did'nt even come from ballycotton pier  .Id doubt any chance of getting such monsters from ballycotton pier these days
Eddie is a true gentleman and one who introduced me to some fantastic bass fishing before these areas got wiped out of real big ladys, but lets not go there

Eddie was the quite man of angling.
Always a true gentleman and willing to pass on that little tip that never failed.
Never a great man for the competitive side of angling but he was the backbone of the Aghada club for years.

His fish were caught in a time when a 50cm cod was thrown back to grow a bit bigger and when 5 or 6 specimen painted ray were the norm in a big competition fished on the Garryvoe beaches.
Not taking it away from Eddie but more than likely he would have 2 or 3 of these specimens.

Eddie had places he fished that anglers would never bother going now or that by now have passed their sell by use date.

Oh! As for giving him bait everyone knows I’ll only give away bait after a competition.

Okay !! I've just been through old books and stuff and found this in the "Gaff" from 1982 a little bit of history  . The Gaff was the IFSA bible at the time and gave you all the fixtures results secretaries ect ect!
And it does confirm that Eddie cull was the Master Angler in 1981.
