boat or shore or both?

Boat should have buoyancy built in, clip for rescue, proper flashing for illumination, and some degree of insulation for countering hypothermia. More expensive. Worth it.

Few boat anglers are using floatation suits nowadays. They are too inflexible for the normal Irish conditions. Fine for fishing in places like Norway where the average temps can be lower, but not for normal fishing in Ireland. A good breathable bib n brace matched with a decent jacket combined with layers of warm clothing is the best option all round. All topped with preferably a decent life jacket or minimum a decent buoyancy aid. You will need to decide whether you want breathability or hard wearing. Hard wearing will have you sweating underneath while breathable will be more comfortable. Hard wearing will find you looking at Guy Coten and suchlike. Vass make some of both. I use Climb8 breathables from Co. Mayo and think they are a quality product.
Most boat anglers are layering their gear. Bases layers that can be removed covered by waterproofs when required. Most will wear a bib & brace for keeping clean and dry. Many small boat anglers wear breathable waders instead of a bib & brace where they expect to be in the water while trailering etc.

I have the IMAX thermal suit and it's great. Only had the one winter season so far but it coped perfectly with last winter and was properly warm and stayed waterproof throughout.

Wish someone had told me that years ago - agree with you 100%. Damn thing weights a ton when wet as well and you can't really use it on the beach, neither.
TBN only ever use it on cod sessions in October and November... and even then it can get too warm. Climate change?

Guy cottens hands down. Tried a few of the major brands and they all leak pretty quickly for me anyway. Guy cottens are still as waterproof as when I got them. you pay for it but they are quality.
