South Bull Wall

#1 Post by DarrenNiall »

Bait: mack strip
Rig: 3 hook dropper
Tide: high 11.30
Weather: westerly wind 20k
Fished: 11.00 to 15.00
Species: mackerel, dogfish, whiting, flounder, pollock.

Started out plugging for Bass while I was walking down the wall, no luck. Then jigging for mackerel from the end of the wall and had a few fairly quickly from the seaward side of the wall. Did lose some tackle as its a bit snaggy. Things slacked off as the tide started dropping again. So I cut some strip and fished the bottom, size 2, 3 hook trace, rolling 3oz lead. Had a nice dogfish on the first cast. Missed a couple of small bites too. Then had a small pollock a bit closer in to the wall. Wind changed to Northerly, and picked up a bit. Fishing went totally slack. Moved around the lighthouse so I could get out of the wind. Fished into the channel, had a few small whiting. Got nipped in the arse by a dog who liked to see me casting LOL. Caught a small flounder and then got fed up with the whiting and started walking back to the car. Tide was down a good bit at this stage and I could see a few nice Mullet mooching in amongst the rocks. Might be tempted to break out the fly rod and try for them sometime, could be fun, or frustrating :) anyway, it was nice to fish that place again, met some nice people, nice views, a few species, and mackerel for my tea. Not a bad little trip.

Nice few fish for you troubles. On it's day that mark can throw up some nice fish saw an angler take a 4lb seatrout on mackerel jigs.

It's a handy enough place to get to. Not a bad place for anyone who wants to take their kids out for an hour. I really enjoyed the setting as much as the fishing.

Didn't see any being caught. But I was speaking to a local who had a small Bull Huss (on crab) while night fishing for Smooth Hound 2 weeks ago. He said that was his only fish that night, and there were also 2 others fishing around the lighthouse (both blanked). Wouldn't mind giving it a go myself some night, it looks a likely spot for them :)
