Conger around Skerries or Balbriggan

#1 Post by jhcabs »

I'm trying to set myself a target to catch a conger in the Skerries, Balbriggan area and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of them being caught around these areas?

I've heard of smaller straps being caught off rocky ground but AFAIK the harbours are too shallow around low water to allow them live there - could be wrong, long time since I fished there....

Hi JHcabs,

Grew up and fished that area most of my life and I think Kieran has it right. That whole stretch of coast is very shallow. As I'm sure your already aware Balbriggan Harbour completely empties out at low water but Skerries does retain some water at the end. If you threw in half a mackeral at the end of that pier I'm pretty sure Sammy the seal will relieve you of it... there are a lot of seals around there. Had many an argument with them trying to land mullet over the years
But if you put enough effort in sometimes you never know what might turn up, tight lines!

Have seen lots of straps in Skerries at low water over the years. Night tide with half a mackerel fillet should work. Been thinking of this myself to be honest. The rough ground at the back of the harbour would be best I'd say but up against the harbour sell at the end you should get them when they're patrolling.

Best of luck with it!

I've tried skerries loads of times but just fed the crabs,I've heard of conger from loughshinny but only rumours really as far as I know the headland across the bay from the pier is the spot also meant to be a few cod and dogs there
