New to shore fishing

#1 Post by yipman »

Hey guys
im new to shore fishing used to go out quite a bit on a small boat from bullock harbour.
i was wondering if you could give me some advice on some spots around Dublin.
ive looked at the mark guide but it seems to be about 10 years old.
i had my first trip to south bull wall a few weeks ago and caught a couple of wrasse had a few snags there though.

question time :)
how is the north bull wall similar to the south wall?
is howth harbour any good?
how about Killiney Beach?was there during the summer seemed like there was alot of weed on the beach.
any other decent spots around dublin or wicklow
would appreciate if you could point me in the right direction, not asking for your secret spots just somewhere
with decent fishing and relatively snag free.

Thank you

If you are new and don't know what you're doing yet then I would suggest Dun Laoghaire harbour. You can catch fish all over the harbour. Not all are big, but they're very catchable. At this time of year, fishing a rising tide in darkness will see you catch any amount of Whiting. Pick a tide about 7 or 8 o clock so you don't have to stay out too late. I would walk out to the end of the pier and fish into the mouth of the harbour. Use Mackerel strip or squid strip as it's tougher and will withstand the Whiting more. You could fish the smaller piers where the boats are tied up if you fancy a bit of ultra light fishing. You'll catch numerous small species, Wrasse, Blennys, Whiting, Dabs, loads. Use small hooks (you're not after Jaws), and have a bit of craic. I've caught very large Wrasse and Cod to 5lb from this pier but generally I fish out the back of the East Pier. You need to know what you're doing if you're fishing there so build up you're experience before you try it. Fish Killiney at night if you want to fish a beach that's close to home. All you need there to connect is lug and fish strip. Good luck.

Killiney is a great beach for beginners, only shore fishing myself a couple of years and Killiney would be my regular beach (only down the road from the house). It's very rare to have hassle with weed and snags down there, clean ground right in front of the car park.

Can throw up decent fish, last winter I had a lot of decent size codling, hoping for more of the same this.

Best of luck

Ye can't go wrong with killiney fish infront of the tea rooms to the left of the entrance fish the incoming tide preferably into darkness ya,ll get a variety of different species this time of year including flatfish whiting codling and some fairly big coalies crab lug and mackerel would be best baits

Tearooms can throw up fish but it's worth mentioning that you can lose a good bit of gear here, rotton bottoms and junk leads will cut down on losses. You can fish in front of the car park on the beach also, mussel tipped with a small piece of mackeral in winter is a great bait here for coalfish which are caught at around 20-30 yards from the shore normally. The usual baits..lug/blacks/crab/mac will catch whiting, coalies, rockling, flats and the odd codling in winter.
Light 3 hook flappers (10lb snoods) with a small 3oz rolling lead and size 4 hooks are good if it's flat calm, if your fishing rougher wetaher up the snoods to 15/20lb and maybe a grip lead.

Same as above can be applied on south beach Greystones, with prob better results but weed can be a nuisance.

You can fish there, just certain summer months during certain hours of the day you can't. The clean ground in front of the car park is for the swimmers and the like.
