New to the game, courtown beaches

#1 Post by bogwoppit »

Hi All,

I've been looking at threads here for a while but haven't posted yet.

I'd like to get fishing on the beaches near courtown as I have a place to stay down there, just south of the town.

It's a small quiet beach that looks promising to me although I don't really have any saltwater experience in Ireland, I've always been a fly fisher.

I have some light gear for spinning and I've tried that with little luck apart from a couple of bass but not much for the time put in.

I'm keen to try a bit of bait fishing but I'm kind of clueless.

Do I need to get a beachcaster and launch baits to the horizon (>50 yds) or if I stay closer will I get anything?

Any tips on the baits to start with? It's mainly sand with a little bit of rock.

Night/day, high/low tide?

Thanks in advance.

Get a beachcaster a few single hook or two hook traces a few grip leads is what ya need tackle wise all the beaches on the stretch you mention throw up a range of species this time of year including flatfish ,coddling ,dogfish , and smoothhpund .. bait wise ragworm tipped with squid or mackrel is a good bait for the smaller species while you,'ll need peeler crab for the smooth hound .. darkness is best and you,'ll be able to buy the baits I mention from courtown angling or Joe carley of southeast baits check out their websites .. I hope this helps getting you started
