Cuttlefish and octopus

#1 Post by Chris T »

Just wondering, has anyone ever caught either a cuttlefish or an octopus on rod and line or even heard of anyone using traps to catch them around the Irish coast??

Had a few octo's from howth harbour over the years
And I'm sure a lot of people have hooked them and just thought they were snagged if they take your bait and make it into a hole you've no chance.

I have caught two octopus one in Killala the other off Bray head the tentacles make a great bait and they grow back on if you leave enough for them to move around and feed

I brought what I thought was a squid to the surface not far from Killala . That could have been octopus , I only saw the splayed out tentacles from the front before it dropped off.
I was going to ask whether people get many squid . There were guys using lamps and jigs off a pier in Kerry last year. They claimed to have caught a good few on some nights but no sign on that one.
I think you will find that octopus can get out of almost anything !
Good luck

Heard about a lad getting an octopus on Killiney, and during the last spell of bad weather I was fishing and noticed a tentacle between the mess. Used it as bait, to no avail though.
