they're talking about christmas already

#1 Post by paddy87 »

Hi all,

As the first day of September is past us I find myself thinking forward to the cold months of winter.
last year I had good few days out in the depths of winter which more often than not resulted in blank after blank, (mostly from piers around Kerry) most of those days I never saw another soul out fishing.

My question is this; what kind of fish are around during the winter months?(if any!) and what kind of ground are they found over?

I just hope no one tells me I'm wasting my time as the thought of not getting out for 3 months is seriously depressing :(

When most people talk winter they think cod but the only real shore cod fishing in ireland from the south coast from south wexford to cork including some big flounders from the estuaries in wexford there is also bass fishing through the winter in parts of kerry so not all is lost .. where I'm from the dublin coast is pretty barren through the winter apart from shoals of tiny whiting and coalfish which leaves me no other option really then to travel for decent winter fishing but there are loads of species to be had through the winter including whiting coalfish flounder codling etc so don't give up fishing if you don't want to....

cheers man that's good to hear.
I have to say the west coast seems a bit barren as well at times,
but I think id put that down to a lack of technique more than anything

Great thread... Thank god I live in Kerry, sometimes I find the fishing better in the winter.... Even tho we don't get big cod, you can catch bass in all the surf beaches all the way through winter..
I'd rather be fishing..
