Pollock Desperation

#1 Post by bluebeard »

Forth blank in a row yesterday evening, hunting for Pollock around Howth.
Really starting to doubt their existence around Dublin.
All the guys I was talking to have said the fishing has been terrible at the usual Howth marks the past week.

Anyone out there care to share their Pollock mark that's within handy driving distance of Dublin?
I promise...if it's a closely guarded secret, I'll take it to my grave! :D

Howth Harbour is your best bet. Try from 8pm onwards. What lures you using? Caught 4 okish 1lbers last night.

Wow...that's interesting!
Was that the East or West Pier?

This week I've been using firetailed jellies and a toby lure.
I tried spinning off the West pier a few times (weeks ago) and didn't have a nibble.

I thinking of digging up some ragworm tomorrow, might try a float along with a lure.

Let your lure sink down to the bottom first after casting and then reel it in with a few sharp twitches, let it sink again and repeat the twitches. Like everywhere in life, it's all about how you can handle your tool ;)

I've been doing that with the jellies.
It's great not having a hook exposed, don't have to worry about snagging on the rocks.

I'm a little more cautious with my kilty lures...at five quid a pop you don't want to lose too many of them!

There are loads of Pollock about Dublin, no disrespect to yourself but you're new to fishing and need to give it a bit of time, you have to learn how to use your lures and not expect the fish to jump on your hook just because you cast out, it's down to you how you present your lure. Keep at it, good luck.

True, true...not expecting immediate success, just looking for advice.
4x2 hour sessions this week and not a nibble, I was thinking it was down to a poor location rather than lack of experience.

But you're probably right.
I've been PM'd some great info though so I'm hoping my luck will change soon.

Howth is a great location for Pollock but at the right time of day, you will always increase your chances of catching on a rising evening or very early morning tide. As for losing a Kilty, well that's part of fishing, you will lose gear but you can try and avoid it a bit by taking the treble hook off and using a single hook instead, that way you can fish deeper and closer to the Kelp.
