Clipped down rig question

#1 Post by Kran1230 »

Hi guys, new to all this so sorry if this is a very stupid question. I recently bought a few ready made rigs and some supplies to copy them and make my own. So the main trace is 80lb and the hook snood 20lb, the 80lb is obviously to handle the strain of the lead when casting but when it's clipped down doesn't that put all the weight and strain on the 20lb snood? Is that the way it's meant to be? I know that even if the snood snapped the lead would still be attached by the 80lb trace. I've used them a good few times and they have worked fine but am I weakening the snood with every cast?

Buy some srt springs they take the strain off the snoods and stop them from stretching

Good question – for normal clipped rigs the BS of the snood doesn’t matter as you’re only clipping it to the rig body to make it aerodynamic. The rig body bears (or should do if made correctly) the full load of the lead. Just don’t go mad crimping and it will be safe as houses.

The only exception is using a pulley rig when the snood does bear the weight of the lead.

Thanks for the replies. Any link to show how those springs work? I've never heard of them.
Maybe I made the snood too short because the way I have it now there's no possible way that the rig body is taking any weight on the cast. I'm using "breakaway impact shield" type clips. As far as I can see with them the snood has to take the weight or it won't hold it in position. Am I better off with a kind of sliding wire in a silicone tube type clip and just slide it into position to take up slack on the snood?

I would start again lad tie your whole trace but don't crimp the snood until the end clip your hook on and u will see exactly were to crimp if ya get me .

Yeah I think I know where I was going wrong alright. I was crimping it too close to the lead link and not having enough room to slide it up and down. Thanks lads.
