Lovely sunny morning so i decided to take a look at a new mark i wanted to try for the first time. it was a long enough walk across quite a few fields and i hoped it would be worth the trek. I rigged up with Sandeel slugs and cast as far as i could, adopting the usual slow retrieve with the occasional flick thrown in. First half hour and i had only two small pollock, one of which fell off as i was trying to land it.
I was expecting better given the conditions and tide and out of frustration started to jig as if i was in a boat about 10 feet out. Gave it a couple of small flicks and took up the slack...... BANG fish on! A lovely 2lb wrasse. From then on it was hit after hit after hit for a solid half hour, pulling in about 20 pollock of various sizes from 1 to 3 1/2 lbs and 10 or so wrasse. I tell you those wrasse can punch above their weight, what a great fight they gave.
I will definitely be returning to that mark. Some pics.
Was there on the high tide this evening but conditions worsened and was to rough to fish the spot properly. There is about 6/7 great spots for wrasse down by where you took that pic.
i love the sandeel slug agardiner , they are lethal! i usually pop on a 5 to 7 gram bullet weight and fish them very slow with a double flick of the rod tip every yard or two. i usually keep close contact to the bottom and the braid is perfect for helping me to feel the ground.
theres some great spots all round there ricochet, you will get a few when the weather calms a bit no doubt. i know ill be back there for sure next chance i get.
Very refreshing to hear of a bass fanatic enjoying the fight from wrasse, most of the comments I read on various forums are complaining about 'Carp rouge' taking lures meant for bass.
Personally I would rather fish the rocks for wrasse and pollack than take bass with soft plastics. I do enjoy taking bass off the top on surface lures.
I would fish the sandeel slug in much the same way as yourself but I bounce it along the bottom where you can feel the boulders and kelp dragging the braid. i also find using the weedless texas rig you get surprisingly few snags that result in the loss of tackle.
I noticed a few colours of the slug but I have always done best on the black and silver one, so much so that I have had to colour in white ones with permanent marker on hard days when I have run out of darker ones.

braid is very good with them alright, you get a close feel with them.

I grew to love the wrasse fishing in the same area as you baitdigger and i would also favour wrasse and pollock fishing to bass hunting. especially when you hook wrasse of 3lbs+ and he bolts. My young fella is hooked as is red joe who i met last year near Doolin. A sound man he is.
