megrim and lemon sole on the west coast

#1 Post by flounder5791 »

got talking to a clare local the othr day and he mentioned catching megrim and lemon sole in march in clare of the shore  ... i found this very hard to believe as the only flats we seem to catch are flounder and small turbot i was just wondering is there any truth to this or is it a load of rubbish :? :? :?

Sounds unlikely even if not impossible. Tales of years gone by maybe?
It ain't easy but it sure is simple!

I think I know this guy, he is a local character and always a bit under the weather :) Have you met him on April 1st by any chance? :D :D :D - Next year he will tell you all about the 450lb six gill shark he caught from Ballyvaughan pier in the late 80's with a 2.5lb lobster as bait and a fairy bottle he'd used as a float :D :D :D From first glance he could be Fr. Jack's *cough* sober sibling but he uses more of the choicer words, motormouth style :D

these fish tend to stick to the deeper water sandmarks but megrim have been recorded back in belmullet years ago from the beach,,,it would certainly be nice to add them to your shore list,,i have a new deep water mark allocated but i think before i even get there i mite have a problem with crabs,,,,,,,ah sure we will try and see,,,,

I would consider some of the deep water marks in Clare to be worth a go. There are place where porbeagles used caught from the shore in Clare. The shallow water mark...don't think so!

I was speaking to one of the crew on the survey ship the Celtic Voyager about this recently and if he thought there was a possibility of targeting them from the shore (as Megrim are shown as inhabiting Galway Bay) perhaps from some of the cliff marks for example... He dismissed this and while they do regularly encounter Megrim, it's as mentioned above in seriously deep water...

That said we had a pollack cough up a perfectly formed small Megrim on board the Maighdean Mhara last summer fishing the South Sound in about 60M... FWIW

Thought I heard of a Megrim being taken in the Daiwa Pairs a few years back?

About 18 years ago we had a megrim of about a 1lb within 400 yards of the shore in Murvey bay off Roundstone. It was the middle of summer and I have the old style photo to prove it. The water was only about 30m deep and it was some surprise.

Caz

PS it was in a boat in case anyone thinks you can cast 400 yards LOL
