Hook Head

#1 Post by Jimy1971 »

Hi lads,new to the forum
I'm trying to get into sea fishing and have bought basic shore gear for myself and my eldest lad ( 2 12ft beach casters, tripod and some lures/feathers). I'm appealing to any fishermen on here for some tips and advice for fishing around the Hook Head area please. Have 2 weeks booked down there in August and hope to get out with my boys as much as possible while there.

In august it fishes well , youll catch mackeral pollock and wrasse with lures and feathers
This time of year bottom fishing with bait will produce dogfish
If fishing with lures and feathers you would be better with a light spinning rod to get a bit of sport from the fish
be careful down there because waves are big and strong , dont go near it in bad weather
good luck

Buy some 2 hook flappers from the shops and get some lug/rag worm and sandeel. There is a neat (and safe) beach near bu called sandeel bay. Fish it at evening time.

As said above the pollack and mackerel should be fun in the evenings, It can get a little crowded there so be warned.

Other more relaxed options are as above and also if you drive around the 'river' side you have lots of spots including aurtherstown and duncannon piers which will be dabs and flounders etc on worm baits.

I'm heading down that direction myself this weekend. haven't fished the area much so its all new to me.

Fished Arthurstown two weeks ago and caught some small codling, and heard the flats where good from there too. although i must say i'm not a fan of peir fishing, as i love fishing from the shore. Will probably try three locations over three days camping, but can't decide between aurthurstown, duncannon, sandeel bay, carnivan bay, saltmills, cullenstown, kilmore quay or rostonstown. any help would be appreciated? feel free to pm me either. i know its still early in the season but im going to crack up if i don't get out for a few sessions asap. Would be nice not to be too disappointed though..

Bringing two rods for bait fishing, as much peeler crab as i can carry and a lure rod with assorted lures.

I'm literally counting the minutes down until i can pack up the car.
