#1 Post by lucky13 »

dug me old spinning rod outa the shed,my very 1st rod,a 7 ft spinning rod, that was bought for me in the 80`s,funny thing is i forgot what make it is and i used to read it every time i cast a german spratt, and i know tis a fairly handy rod as i was always told to look after it because it cost a few bob back then, still have the reel for it too,any help on what it looks like or what it could be would be apprciated greatly.cheers lads. :)

My dad and I had 2 of those in different sizes, stiff heavy buggers but that's what we used in the mid 80's: It is a Daiwa rod

All the vintage ABU's from the 70's have a full cork grip as far as I'm aware of.
I had one of their first 3pce Diplomat hollowglass rods and a few others manufactured previously about 45 years ago  )
This one hasn't, and there was no shortage of good quality cork oak at the time, so it looks like a remake or copy to me, the bright red whipping is a bit duller than in the original ABU's and the reel seat is more modern being red anodised Aluminium, a feasible process for mass marketing being invented only in the late 70's.
I'd reckon it's a remake or a copy of one of the original orange ABU full fiberglass blank spinning rods from another competing tackle company at this time. FWIW.

The few vintage ABU's I have from the 70's atlantic 403zoom, a 484 and a boat rod have ABU on the bottom of their butt caps, have a look you might be surprised.
To be honest the rod dont seem to have the look of ABU quality about it.
the rings are the same type that is on the 403 thats about it

precisely John, I cant imagine that this rod is a genuine ABU, far too cheap looking, nevertheless I'm far off to be an expert...

i think he bought in the blanks either from west cork (clonakilty) or england and then just built the rods himself from spinning rods to beach rods and they were tidy rods too.
