Has any one any experience with these reels??
i am on the hunt for a rough ground reel, for 30lb line, deep water, fast tides and can achieve good distance as i'd be fishing form height or at range in the rough or sometimes both.
would the 535/545 gs knobby do the job for me.
any other suggestions welcome.

Re: Penn 535/545gs mag "knobby"
i have the 535 gs and its built like a tank ideal for fishing from a height or really heavy winching... it has a huge line capasity which is a big plus... i dont know about the mag version but the 535 can be heavy and cumbersome to cast with and i prefer to use a daiwa slosh for rough ground work which is lighter and i find casts better.. the slo30sh is a more allround friendly rough ground reel than the penn in my opinion but i wont take it away from the penn its a real powerhouse... i really only use mine for short range rough ground work for conger and things like that ... hope this helps

Re: Penn 535/545gs mag "knobby"
Used the 535 knobby for a while, has some great points as said above such as the line capacity but I have gone back to the penn 525 for rough work, much easier to cast and will stand up to heavy pulling as well

Re: Penn 535/545gs mag "knobby"
cheers for that, explained it well.
i recently tried out a abu 7000 mag with a slighltly slimmer diameter 35lb mono on a kompressor s mk 1. the rods itself is larger diameter than all my others, plus the reel is a size bigger than any 6500 sizes i own but being truthfull i didnt have any issues casting it so i am wondering if how, what your saying about your set up would compare to my views on mine??
i'm glad to here you use the word winching, thats what i need.
thanks
dave

Re: Penn 535/545gs mag "knobby"
ok i see, i normally use a mk1 525 and a mk2, one on each rod. great stuff for marks i'd fish needing 20lb line but for a few places i'm really gonna need the 30lb line and enough of it.
how do you think the 535 compares to abu 7000 in sizes?? is it due to the size you mean its easier to cast or better mags etc???
thanks
dave

Re: Penn 535/545gs mag "knobby"
Hi Weedave
Have used both the 535 and the 535 knobby, indestructable reels but just found both very awkward for casting, the size means that it sits a good bit out from the rod so for thumbing it feels wrong, have used 30 and 35lb line on the 525's, i know i have reduced capacity by using these strength lines but when trying to bully conger out of some marks in Clare you need the line strength and casting distance at a lot of these marks is not a huge issue. Have not used the abu 7000 so not able to compare on size..
