flapper rigs

#1 Post by daveyboy »

Just wondering do any of you put different hook sizes on a flapper rig so that you can target different species with the one rig? eg bass and flatties?

I usually use size 2 hooks and if you want to try target diff species use diff bait on each hook! maybe a bit of mack or one or sand eel on the other.

Small hooks will catch big fish.

However, surely the most impotant thing is to match you hook size and pattern to the size/type of bait.

so maybe if using crab you would need a bigger hook than for worms etc?. So how about using a 2 hook flapper-one with a 2/0 hook and crab and the other with size 2 hooks and worm or mack for flatties?

If using crab, generally the smallest hook i would use would be a 2/0 and the biggest a 6/0 - depends what size of bait I want to use, also I tend to use a wider gape pattern hook such as the sakuma manta extra, I find this helps in keeping the hook point clear of the bait.

I'd usually be targetting bass, hounds and ray, so hook sizes can be larger than if say fishing estuaries for flounder using crab, perhaps size 2's or 1's would be best then - I rarely fish estualies for flounder myself.

I rarely fish different size hooks on the same rig, fishing 2 rods allows me to use different rigs/hook sizes etc - or if using just the one rod, then alternate rigs with different sized hooks on that setup - this is just how I do it, others may well use different methods.

i normally just use a 1.0 hook with a rag/sandeel flapper and it seems to do fairly well ive cought the smallest of flatties and pretty much everything never had problems.

2/0 will catch most fish like schoolies, flounder, whiting and so on if you are targeting bigger fish like big bass or wrasse, dogs rays etc Id use bigger hooks. The flapper rigs always work best with a grip lead so your hooks wont be on the ground. I find the one up one down rig kills two birds with the one stone. You will one bait on the ground and one bait moving in the water. It gives you more of an option. You can also use two up one down. You would be suprised how smaller fish take big hooks. I saw a turbot the size of my hand take a sandeel on a 3/0 hook last week.
Remember if you want big fish you need at least 3/0 hook with a big bait.
The finest gift you can give a fisherman is to put a good fish back, and who knows if the fish that you caught isn't someone else's gift to you?"

2016 Bass, Flounder, Turbot, Dogfish, Pollock,Mackerel, Bull Huss, Coal Fish

2013 8

2012 (8) Bass (P.B 7.5 lb)

2011 (17)

2010 (14)
