Rod reel combo

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

Rod reel combo

#1 Post by UDICE »

Hi Lads,

Just looking for a few opinions on arod and reel combo for beach casting. An Abu 6500 ct mag eleite and a Greys Apollo Mk3 13ft. Mainly fishing over clean ground to mixed but nothing too rough. Casting 20-60 gr depending on conditions and fish sought.
Thanks in advance for help.

From what I've read the Apollo can be a bit stiff and would be more suited to slightly heavier fishing, although I personally use a greys Orion m2 for all my fishing, predominantly clean ground, which some people would class as a bit stiff also but I've seen bites from postage stamped sized flatties at times on it! If it was me I'd probably go for the 14ft. As for the reel I'm more into my daiwa's, 7ht millionaire mag, slightly dearer than the Abu but worth every cent, don't find it out of place on mixed ground either. Seems a bit over the top for the kind of weights you intend fishing with, only around 1oz?? Are you sure you didn't mean 120-160g??

the apollo is a rough ground rod and a bit stiff for general fishing.. something like a daiwa supercast x would be a good allround rod and ya cant go wrong with a penn 525 mag as an allround multiplier that can do a bit of everything

I have the apollo its a graet rod for the really rough stuff, thats its job. But its not what you want.

I take it your budget is not a problem as per the gear you specified is a little on the expencive side.

Will cost 400 sterling plus.

We need to know a little more to help

1. What is your skill level.

2. Whats your budget

3. Why are the weights specified so low (is it your not sure)

Most beach casters are nnot speced for this low weight. Bass rods are in the 11ft 6 range.

The opollo needs 6oz min to get a cast.

Hi Lads,

Thanks for all the responses. I did mean to put 120-160gr (3 -4 oz). Dyslexic fingers again! I see that your all of the same hymn that the Apollo is for the real rough stuff. Think I will be putting a bit more thought into it before splashing the cash. Budget is about 4 -5 hundred tops. That's for rod and reel. I have used a Abu before in the 6500 but if ya think there are better out there for the same money I'd like to know. As for skill level Ican cast but I ain't no Moeskops by a lon lon shot!

Thanks for the help again lads. Back to the drawing board again.
