Crab Bait

#1 Post by chenz116 »

folks ive noticed alot of people are using crab as bait and its bringing some nice fish.

Does it have to be peeler crab ? and do you have buy it from a bait shop

or is it just a case of going to catch a few crabs before you start your fishing ?

generally peeler crab for bass and smoothies - softies may also work - but the scent is not as strong

for ballan wrasse the hardbacks will do

you can order peeler crab in advance from tackle shops and bait diggers such as dave tilley and henrys tackle.. its expensive but well worth it as it is absolutely deadly at times for certain species.. it comes into its own from may to november for species such as bass, flounder, smoothies, wrasse, cod, ray etc... its served as bait by shelling the crab removing lungs and bound onto a 1/0-4/0 hook with bait elastic

you might get a dozen for a tenner - but it fluctuates depending on the seller - how often you use them etc.

Dave Tilly is your man for any fresh and frozen bait you want, top quality bait, and usually a few euro cheaper than tackle shops.

I've been let down with the quality of some shop bought bait myself in Dublin(partly my own fault for not checking it before I left the shops), bearing in mind the stuff in the shop could have been a good few days old, whereas Dave's bait is usually as fresh as you'll get and kept in the best possible conditions.

Dave Tilly 0876837759, ring him before you head over to his shop as it isnt staffed all day.

Hope that helps.

Forgot to add, preparing and presenting peeler crab baits on the hook can take a bit of practice, so here's a link that might help.

Other handy video tips on the site aswell.
