float fishing

#1 Post by daveyboy »

I've found that when I'm float fishing, the trace below the float ends up wrapped around the float after casting. Anyone got any tips on how to prevent this? I'm using a silicone float stop to set the depth. The set up is float-weight-swivel-trace of a few feet-hook. I'm using a lower breaking strain line for the trace with the hook so if I get snagged I'll only lose the hook. Any tips welcome. Thanks in advance

I use the sliding float setup alot Davey, unfortunately your trace will tangle round the float from time to time, no way I know to stop this.

cheers for the tips lads. Just as an aside. do you find float fishing as effective as fishing the bottom? i suppose it depends on the situation. I'm learning myself and have to say I find the float fishing a quite relaxing way to fish.

The way to set up a float is as your doing but to ad a bead and a stop under the float as well  So you have a bead and a stop (stop knot/swivel) at lest one and half times the lenghts of the float from your lead.

Here is a good diagram for a float rig http://www.planetseafishing.com/rigs/Sl ... ding-Float
showing how the lead should be positioned. If you set the depth so that the lead is on the bottom you have a flowing trace fishing as close to the ground as possible. Overcast the spot and slow down the line so the rig can stretch before it hits the water as d2FISH has described it and you shouldn't have problems with tangles.

m8 its due to the lenght of the snood (trace) 'too long will tangle on long casts'...either shorten it and get the depth my moving the float stop... or put a split shot (yep the type used in freshwater fishing!) usually x2 size of either SSG, AAA or BB just above the centre of the snood will see that all lands good to fish...

Lots of good advice lads . Cheers for taking the time to reply. I'll try shorten the trace so and add a stop and bead to heep the float above the lead. I'll try the casting tip too. Bit more to it than just lashing it out there eh!
