bangor harbour mini hunt wed 22nd july 09

#1 Post by Al and Jordan »

People: me and jordan

Duration: 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm

Tide: dropping off and back in again

Weather: between the torrential downpours glorious sun

Bait: rag and cooked peeled prawns

Rigs: 2 hook mini rigs (flappers size 10 hooks)

Results: ME: 16 shannys, 2 shore rockling, 1 long spined sea scorpion, 2 corkwing wrasse and 20 mackeral to 1lb 3ozs :P (new p.b.) JORDAN: 12 shannys, 2 long spined sea scorpions, 1 short spined sea scorpions, 2 tompot blennys to 19cms (new p.b.) and 20 mackeral and 3 whiting.

Report: we arrived to find a shoal of mullet in the harbour, but we were only kitted out for minis and feathers for the boat  but not to pass up an opportunity jordan tried to get their attention freelining some rag across their noses. he got a couple of follows, but no takes and 20 mins later they went on their way out of the harbour and back out to sea    (he'll get one yet  ) so we concentrated on the minis until 4pm when we had arranged to go out with brian on the bangor boat for a bit of macke bashing to get the freezer filled :D . our first mark produced shanny after shanny with only a few corkwing wrasse to mix things up a bit. so we decided to try and get a piccy of every differently marked shanny for the report. it's amazing how many different colours these wee guys come in. everything from jet black to a sandy green colour. so with plenty of pics we went back to the car to get ready for our wee boat trip. the trip went well with us getting about 40 macks for keeping between us and one of my macks was respectable weighing in at 1lb 3ozs :P . that was supper sorted then  . jordan also got 3 whiting and as with any boat trip it was over all too soon    but great crack at only £27 for us both for almost 3 hours at sea :P :P . so the boat gear went away and we headed for the back of the eisenhower pier for the last 2 hours for a go at the minis again. we met the young lad from the other day again and he had his father with him this time and they put their feathers away as jordan was showing them where to fish for the minis. he was getting fish after fish and the selection was a bit better here with jordan getting 2 good sized tompot blennys. one of which was a new p.b. for him at just under 20cms  . when i turned around and looked where jordan was fishing at, he had a crowd of mackie bashers around him amazed with the minis      they were'nt having any luck with the feathers as there must have been 20 people feathering and i only saw 1 mackie landed in 2 hours :| :| :| :| :| but i was here the night before at the same time and people were pulling them out in full houses a go. i got a phone call from a windy who was over at carrickfergus harbour and he told me that people were pulling up the mackies hand over fist along with all other kinds of fish he did'nt recognise. so that must have been why bangor seemed absent of macks, they must have been over the other side of the lough   we gave it until 9pm and packed up and headed for home happy enough with our haul for the day :D :D :D
