Wexford Bass and Hounds 16 June 09

#1 Post by Danny M. »

People:Baz, Tom, Pat and Myself

Duration:9pm to midnight

Tide:rise

Weather:Fresh

Bait:Frozen Crab and Fresh Lug

Rigs:4/0 Pennel pulley for me, the boys were on 3/0 pulleys.

Results:Baz and Tom drew a Blank.
Pat had 1 Hound and 1 Bass
I had 3 Bass 2 Hounds and 1 Flounder

Report: Discussions were had whether we would go for Tope, Hounds or Bass. We settled on Bass due to day that was in it, the Ban had lifted and we were all craving a bit of Silver :)
Pat and Tom dug the bait and headed out, Baz and myself arrived at the mark later on and there was no fish showing yet, but the Buzz was in the air and |Red Bull in the Belly!
We baited up and got the business end of things in the wet stuff, a couple of gasps later and Pat was bent into a bar of silver in the surf which was duly landed and released. Happy faces all round  A couple of casts later I got a decent hit and struck into what seemed like a decent Bass, after a short struggle I landed 2 Bass on the 1 Pennel rig ! What a way to break in the end of the Ban!!! Drive her on Charlie 
Conditions were starting to become in fishable with weed becoming a problem with Baz and Tom getting a hard time of it.
The frustration was broken with shouts from Pat who was out in the surf at this stage, Big Fish Big Fish was the call, and he thought he was onto a cracker of a Bass. We ran down to lend a hand, the fish was given Pat a great scrap and was taken its time about coming in. Then I saw it, a nice Hound had taken Pats lug bait, the fish was tailed and brought in.
I switched tactics straight away and loaded up with frozen crab in search of a Hound, my bait was in the water no more than 1 min when the rod bent towards the water and line peeled from the spool. I struck and was into a decent Hound the power of it was savage. He headed straight for Wales and I was just a passenger, he was taken line at will and bringing me for a jog down the beach. Baz joined me and after a tiring struggle to and fro the fish was tailed by Baz, we were at least 150 yards down the beach from my starting position and my left fore arm was aching!! Best shore scrap of the year so far for me, this fish deserved a Blue Peter Badge !
I fired out a lug bait next in search of a Bass and got the run around by another Hound, thankfully this fellow didn’t fancy going to Wales and was landed quickly. I landed another Bass and a Flounder soon after before it became impossible to fish.

We tried to stick it out put we couldn’t keep the baits on the sea bed, shame as there was plenty of fish there to be had.

Until next time.
