waterfoot Co. Antrim thursday 19th march 09

#1 Post by Al and Jordan »

People: me and the dog

Duration: 4pm to 9pm

Tide: 5pm HW 11pm LW

Weather: bit chilly, but no wind or rain

Bait: squid, lug and rag

Rigs: 3 hook flappers

Results: 12 flounder and 2 coalies

Report: i was out digging lug this morning and it was one of those sessions where i seemed to be cutting more of them in half than getting them up in one piece    so 50 or so damaged lug was all the prompting i needed to get out for a session that evening   well it would have been a shame to let them go to waste   so it was off to waterfoot to do a bit of flattie bashing    so i packed the car and got the dog ready and hit the road. things were looking up as it was a cracker of a day. the sun was shining and it even felt like the start of summer :P i arrived at the beach to see a couple of families having a day out at the spot i wanted to fish   so i moved a couple of hundred yards on up the beach. the first 2 hours were dead with not so much as a nibble. but i fairly much expected it to be like that until i lost the light. i was kept entertained by the 2 surfing ducks who were 12 foot out in front of me      i wish i'd brought the camcorder with me as they were putting on a cracking performance     . they followed the surfline up and down the beach for an hour or so riding the crest of the wee waves at the tide line. they were class, and seemed to be really enjoying themselves   then as the light began to fade i got a knock and landed a wee flounder, quickly followed by another. by now the sun had set and bites were fairly frequent with flounder after flounder and the odd coalie. i even got a double shot of spotty orange flounder. i remember when i first got one of them last year i was convinced they were plaice       . but we live and learn. the biggest fish of the night was the last fish i caught. a 30cm flounder with some old scar tissue across his skin. it looked like something had grabbed him in the past, but he lived to swim another day    . all the fish were returned and swam away to grace my hooks another day(hopefully when they're a bit bigger)

Good man, sounds like your doing a wee recce for saturday. We are heading up early to try and pick a spot to find.

the easiest way I tell the difference between flounder and plaice is running my hand over the back the fish, smooth = plaice, rough = flounder.

great report and those ducks look like proper wee surfers hehe

Nice session there AGAIN. , I had planned a wee trip up that direction on Sunday but my usual fishing nemisis is off to watch the footie. Instead I have been roped into a fishing session on the Bann  (yuk, river fishing), no matter the ammount of times I have coarse fished I just cant get into it, its those tiny frikkin hooks that get me, anyhows im rambling now. Well done to you and the dog!

Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin' bluegills and tommycods. This shark, swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', an' down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's just too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.

2010- Sea Trout, Codling, Pollock, Coalie, Whiting, Flounder, Doggies, Plaice, Dab.

cheers lads. it was a good short session    and the ducks were amazing. they were there again yesterday. i'm only getting round to replying to all your posts as we had a bit of a hetic day yesterday. we were out in red bay on the boat from 10am to 3pm with not so much as a nibble   but on the up side we did get to meet immunecfg from the site as he was booked out on the boat too :P :P . always good to put a face to a name. and dawsey learnt a valueable lession. never have a hard night on the beer before a boat trip :? :? :? :? :? i don't know what was more lumpy. the sea,,,,, or the contents of his stomach     then we headed on round to waterfoot again as our club had a roving comp from 5pm to 10pm. so by the time we got dawsey dropped off home we did'nt get back in ourselves until near 2am    long day was had by all     but good craic all the same :P
