A decent read.....

Hi guy's ,
I've just read a book called Sea Angling Supreme by Mike Millman,which was released in 1979....An excellent mix of information(OK it's nearly 30 years old and most of it could be considered obsolete) ,stories,pictures and records.Have to say most of the book is about boat fishing which I'm not really into but the stories more then held my interest.
It's also not a book for the C&R people with tales of every fish caught being kept (one story involves a catch of over 4000lb of fish

).
My question is could anyone suggest a fishing book or books that could be considered required reading (not bothered if it's technical,stories or history)....my time fishing is a bit limited at the moment and there's only so many times you can read I.A.

That one called "Cod" and the one called "The end of the line" are pretty much required reading for any sea angler, I'd have thought.

"The Sea Angler Afloat and Ashore" and "Bass" by the late Des Brennan, (Saviour of the Irish bass.) Both a bit dated but still good reads.

I can recommend Bass fishing by john darling.. it gives an insight into his knowledge of bass fishing from an early age. there is also some hints and tips in there to wet the appetite.

If you have the ole eye strain after a while you can switch to Henry Gilbey wild on fishing. Its a great watch. They are currently showing loads of fishing on discovery life.

over the last 2 years i have started a fishing library to gain a bit of knowlege around the whole sea fishing circuit. i must have upwards of 30 books now and out of them all here are the 3 best reads,

sea angling in ireland by john rafferty. good simple read which ain't too technical and has excellent photos and its one of the few which is relevent to irish angling 9 OUT OF 10

the second is a species guide which is a part of the collins gem guide series called fresh and saltwater fish. it is well illustrated and has a lot of the more obsure fish that inhabit our shores included. this one has proved its worth on quite a few occasions and the fact that it is a pocket sized book it travells everywhere with us in our tackle box 10 OUT OF 10.

the third is philip's guide to seashores and shallow seas of britain and northern europe by andrew campbell. now this one is a more in depth read which goes into scientific detail about all marine enviroments and all marine life on our shores, don't be put off by all the scientific references and terminology as there is a full glossary in the back. with this one you will find if it ai'nt in the book, it don't exsist.

Some time ago I traced down a book by Larry Dixon aka John Dory columnist with the Belfast Telegraft called Catch them'em while you can. The book was printed about 1960 and is now out of print .I go a copy out of my local library . Not to hard too read . It was nice to read something written by someone local .

Thanks Lee i'll borrow that book off you the next time we're out (Probably need it to keep me occupied between casts

).
One thing i've noticed in the book shops i've been in recently is the lack of books (both new and old) on sea fishing...is it just a sea fishing thing,a lack of demand or are sea anglers just an illiterate bunch

....maybe we're just to busy fishing..
