A change to the Constitutional guarantee on private property rights, to clearly assert the nation's ownership of all foreshore and all waterways would settle these disputes for good.

BTW I read a while back that the Cavendish family are descended from the original Boyles who got the Ardmore estate and its rights from sir Walter Raleigh in settlement of a debt. Both the Boyles and the Cavendishes are big names in science - Boyle's Law, and the Cavendish Physics Laboratory etc. You'd think with that kind of background they show a bit more intelligence and decency, but its probably all run at arms length as a corporate thing.

Just another thought or question ,is the proposed waste treatment plant going ahead?Well if it is i would be a bit concerned if the relevant authorities in the food sector would'nt have constant monitoring of any shellfish in the estuary been used for human consumption.
Not saying pollution is going to occur ,but if it does [shock horror ] surely any shellfish would become non consumable

Was talking to a fisherman at the boat yesterday,the mussels are not for sale as food,he sells them on as seed mussels for others to plant again..

I'm pretty sure he owns the riverbed too. Or as it was phrased to be before, he owns the gravel rights in the river. So he owns the rocks too...

Don't forget shennick island off skerries ,permission was given to completly rape the mussel beds in a supposedly environmentally protected area or whatever they call the islands.dukes letter or not ,long story short money still talks in this country if u have it u can do as u like

yea she from dunmore in waterford tbh this boat does not be out much she is so big she can get what she need in a short time so its actully not as bad as u think its not fishing year round its not as bad as other fishing vessels

Sadly you are wrong.
By his irresponsible actions he has destroyed one of the best match angling venues in the country.
I’ve heard of anglers losing up to 10 rigs and leaders in competitions from getting snagged in these mussel beds.
You will lose fishing gear there.

God only known what damage he is doing to the sea bed and the fish stocks when he is removing these mussels

I've listened to the documentary a few years ago, it was originally broadcast in 2008 (you can podcast it from the iTunes Store or rte).
I have to say I couldn't believe it was possible then, same now, so I was very interested to see this topic here...

The Duke is interviewed and says clearly that he would welcome an approach from Youghal council to discuss the fishing rights in the harbour.
Did this discussion ever happen?
