Report:
Headed down to mine and Scotsmans favourite beach, much maligned by locals I have to say but we like it
Arrived there about 9.30 or so to find a tiny bit of surf and the tide ebbing fast. No matter, I quickly tackled up, using one rod in close in yet another attempt to see are there are any numbers of flounder on this beach and another wellied as far as is possible. A 3 hook flapper to size 4s was tossed out into what little bit of white water there was about 20 yards or so. Small crab baits were the order of the day (couldnt be arsed digging worms) After doing that, the other rod got the full razor treatment and was wellied out as far as I could. (50 yard comments not welcome...
It didn't take long to see a bit of action as the rod fished in short started performing a merry dance. My first instincts were that it was a bass but as I eventually slid the fish up the beach I was both surprised and pleased in equal measure to have my first beach caught codling of the season. A grand fella of about 3lbs or so neatly hooked in the scissors and returned.
Whilst rebaiting this rod, the other one started to rattle and dropping everything I lifted into a decent enough fish. Didnt feel like a bass and certainly not a doggie either.... Surprise number 2 of the evening was a fine flounder of over 40 cm taken at well over 100 yards on a full razor bait....
Both rods rebaited and recast, cod number 2 of the evening, slightly smaller than the first slid up the beach, again caught in very close and in very shallow water. The rod at range had developed a slack line bait and a nice bass of 3lbs or so made the long journey in to the beach. Duly unhooked and slipped back. That was to be that and as it approached LW the fishing stopped. With closing time at the chippy being a bit random these days I erred on the side of caution and left at 11pm.
So a night of surprises, cod, on a shallow surf beach inside 20 yards in calm conditions..... Flounder coming in from range..... The beach fishing well on the ebb... Ah sure, thats fishing....
