Went to Poolbeg this afternoon, at first tried feathering at the hotwater outflow but the smell was horrendous so I ended up walking down to the light house. 2 hours over high tide and no mackerel..

Holidaymakers and locals still pulling them in now and then from North Mayo rock and pier marks, but mostly smaller than the first wave two weeks ago.

The middle of July and still no decent reports of mackerel on the east coast yet. What the hell is going. Are these the fruits of over fishing?

It was the same last year, things didn't kick off for me until the start of August, so I'd say they'll start turning up any day now, especially with this good weather. I believe the west coast is fishing well for them at the moment though!

Fished feathers from Coliemore harbour for the hour or so before high tide yesterday and Thursday. Not a bite. Was talking to a kayak fisherman who fished up and down Dalkey Sound and he got nothing either. I was getting them (off and on) as early as first week in June last year.

Half a dozen small stamp mackeral on the kayak out of Ardglass last night, one decent sized one.
All the little ones returned.

Witnessed someone come in from their session on a boat with a bucket of the small ones they had pulled in, and were then throwing in off the harbour wall feeding seals and sea gulls. Bizarre behaviour.

Tried Coliemore harbour for an hour and a half coming up to high tide today...not a nibble.

Was too busy anyway with boats and kayaks. Everyone in a kayak seemed to be on a mission to swim into my line.

there are a few singles and doubles round the inner bay now - no full sets but nice compensation when you are lure fishing for bass...
