Popped up Baits

#1 Post by shortcircuit »

Hey lads do any of you use popped up baits in order to avoid crabs or for other reasons of presentation?

Are pop up beads the best / only method of doing this?

Any other info on this technique would be welcome.

I use them a good bit. Wine cork can be used aswell. They do work.

Ive used them with mixed succession. Small pop ups like the gemini ones that glow in the dark and slide on the hook length are the best pop ups I've used but you will get a lot of coalies and whiting during the winter on them. I find that if your targeting a fish that sits mid water then they work great. If its a fish that hugs the bottom like Cod looking for crab or rays, they aren't as good but that's not to say you won't get fish on them. In areas with a lot of crab I find the big pop ups like a wine cork can be used effectively but the crabs always manage to get the bait eventually

Thanks lads

The idea of using wine cork (or a section of one) is a great idea. The phrase "floats like a cork" exists for a reason I guess!

I will give them a go next time I'm getting plagued with crabs.
