FERRY POINT YOUGHAL

#1 Post by Clive O Driscoll »

So, I went down this morning as planned and got there for 11. Met up with Eddie Fletch ( member here ) and after our greet, I got to getting setup, Eddie had a Lovely Fish on first cast, think a coalie and then that was it... I missed 2 fish, and then the weed started and it was so bad that we both decided to move around the corner.

There was no weed there and also no fish, not even a tug. Eddie left after awhile and I decided to stay and have a few more casts..
Luckily I did :) Fresh 5 1/2lb Bass, which is my pb by the way. He took Crab on the bottom hook of my pulley pennel rig, right in the corner of his jaw, a great scrap.. The bite was not what I expected, a few tiny tugs, followed by nothing then as I held the rod slightly lifting it, he took it hard and I striked , well happy.

This happened at just before 5 on a nearly fully Out tide, and last cast of my sess. the little dogfish.

Looking forward to meeting up again and having a fish.

Regards,

Went down saturday and first cast a Beautiful size whitting, but thats where it ended as I had bumped into a Friend whom I didn't see in 25 years so as he was freezing, I packed up at 2 and went for lunch.

Really great to meet up with my mate but also gutted I couldn't stay, will hit it this weekend again and Pray for a Cod, I believe I had 2 fish on as my Rod buckled over when I was reeling in, and a Fair weight behind it, strong fighting fish, felt to me like a Bass, but as I got it in close, the rod released and I only had the Whitting... Was on the Wall on saturday for my last time fishing in Ireland (going back to France tomorrow). Got 1 cod about 25cm on the first cast 1h before low on razor (threw it back obviously). Then a few bites but no fish until the tide came in and it wasn't fishable. Had a few nice fishing day over my 4 months here, really enjoyed it, I'll come back !

Species caught : bass, flounder, pollack, coalfish, cod, whiting, mackerel and dogfish :)

Was looking forward to a Nice evening of fishing, after a few nice casts I reckon i must have forced the casts a tad and both lines snapped off the multi's :( maybe the line could be a little too old?? I had a spool of Drennan 20lb in a drawer for over 10 years, so this is what I loaded up, the knots were strong from the mainline to the shock leader , so I'm guessing I must be the idiot for pushing the rod..

1 Dog and I walked away, just not my night. 3 hours all up.
There was 2 others fishing so maybe they had better luck...

Your no idiot Clive it took me 15 or more years to master the art of controlling a multiplier reel I would not blame the old line the reel has to be set up properly and magnets on full to start with after getting the casting off with full magnets on you can gradually slack them off a little at a time. I always have the magnets on full to start with and after about two or three casts I adjust them slowly until I feel confident
to blast it out as far as I can. get it right first time and you will not have any problems.
mickser
I have not fished in two years hoping to change that this year with anything ?

Cheers Mickser,

I thought I had the Abu dialled in but if I'm honest i do remember giving it a bit more off the mags, but I'm also guessing I'm just not used to the power of the T900, regarding the old line, well thats chucked now and brand New suffix loaded on both, I'm heading out again tomorrow night so will ease off with the brakes and just relax and hopefully get me a Cod.

Few polish lads came over to me last night and they reckon a Lot of 9lb Cod being taken around the bridge etc, and I've heard of a few Bigger too.

Tight lines

Went for the Bandstand in Youghal but there was 3 fishing it, so decided to try Whiting bay as the Tide was not right for Ferrypoint, Ocean looked really good for Cod, beautiful surf, coloured water and overcast..

Not a bite in 5 hours fishing the Full tide - down

Ah well still nice to be out Fishing

Just back from Ferrypoint, went down and this time round decided to fish the Ebb, from the quieter side of the point, started around 2.20.

Had dug a few Lug and rag yesterday and got me some Black Lug from the shop, wind was a bit of a problem after a few hours, but thankfully I didn't screw up my reel and didn't loose a thing, got to be happy about that... Though it hurts to see the rod getting a few more scratches :(

Cod was my Quest and after months of trying, I finally got 1, though a small Codling.. But the target species was finally had, followed by a coalie and had a few other bites but no other catch..

Nice to have met a bloke from Dublin and saw 1 other fishing, I would have stayed a bit longer but the Wind was pissing me right off..
