Mullet Running Water

#1 Post by Ben »

In my local river, at one of the first pools coming up from the sea, , I have noticed shoals (20-30) of mullet at high tide. Last night one took a mepps spinner intended for sea trout. Does anybody have any experience fishing for mullet in running water?

Mullet love to wander up and down the tidal reaches of rivers. pretty unusual to actually catch one by accident though. unless it was foul hooked.

I caught a nice one with a mepps once too. Was lip hooked also. Have fished the same spot (estuary) regularly for sea trout with mepps amongst other lures and never had a tap off one(with lots of fish running through). Maybe the odd fish is just more aggro?or possibly depends on the type of mullett??

Would b interested to know the best way to fish for them in running water also. Can't see that bread would be an option because it would be hard to keep it in the same spot long enough with the running water.

Try trotting a freelined small piece of bread crust about the size of a 5c coin using a size 8 or 10 hook. Float it past them with some free offerings and if you're careful and they don't see you you wil get takes. They're very wary though, once you've seen them they've probably seen you!!
