hi lads i got a call from my neighbour asking if i wanted to go out on a charter boat on saturday week obviously i agreed to go i have no idea what boat it is or what we will be going after does anyone know what i could expect the lads im going with dont really do much but they are going because a family member is coming home from australia will it be mainly mackerel or should we be just drifting jigging hokkais over the reefs

it is out of cleggan we are fishing around the islands for cod and pollack

There is some fantastic reef around clifden & Cleggan. Hokkais will of course work, but you should also try shads, jelly worms, and paddle tail soft plastics either on lead heads or flowing traces.

what kind of weight would the cod and pollack be and what other species would you get on the reefs

Most of the Pollack there will be in the 3 - 4 lbs mark, with a few 7 - 8lbs and a chance of a double figure. If you can catch some Launce and live bait them on a flowing trace you'll pick out the better Pollack. I know John Brittain in Cleggan has had Cod over 20lbs and Ling to over 30lbs, but I would consider either species over 8 lbs to be a good fish from there. Some of the reef marks there are relatively shallow (less than 100ft) so you can fish them with spinning gear for maximum sport. Other species available would be coalies, Ballan Wrasse & Cuckoo Wrasse, Conger at anchor, Haddock, Whiting, Gurnards etc etc etc, there's not much you can't catch there. It's a stunningly beautiful place to go fishing too. You'll have a good day!!!!

had a good day it was organised for my neighbours brother who was coming over from canada for the week and he brought 3 of his friends and they were all very hungover so we had to call it a day at 3.30 as a few couldnt handle the swell any way back to the fishing we stopped off over 3 reefs out from slea head there was loads of pollack and coalies from 1-5lbs nothing huge i also caught a launce and a beutifuly coloured cuckoo wrasse every drop brought up a full house on the feathers . it was a brilliant day and hope to go out on one again soon
