spider crabs

#1 Post by blowin »

Not the type of shore fishing normally discussed on here but does anyone know of a pier or rock mark these can be caught from ? Specifically on the West coast between , say , Westport and Sligo ?
I understand that they have already moved inshore further south .
PM would be greatly appreciated .
Cheers .

Get your snorkeling gear on! They can be caught quiet easily by this method in shallow water. The Spider crab has replaced the Brown crab which has been heavily fished in Irish inshore waters and are very prolific inside 25 fathoms to such a degree that inshore tangle net fishermen do not shoot their gear inside this depth in many places during the summer months. They command a very poor price and are a nuisance to inshore nets men.
They do however make delicious eating with a very sweet flavoured meat. Better than Crayfish or Lobster in my estimation.

used to pick these when snorkeling ,anywhere ull find deep water marks for Pollock/wrasse they should be there .They make great eating but there a pain in the hole to prep.Im in cork so I cant help you with a mark but if you follow the same line as Pollock you wont go far wrong.

I accidentally caught a large one whilst fishing for thornies at Portacloy, just outside Bellmullet, about 4 or 5 years ago
