Braid or Mono Shock Leader

#1 Post by Camcolite »

Any preference and why?

I use braid main-line and a hard mono shock leader but still kind of on the fence.

My own reasoning is

The mono is kinder to the rod when casting because of the stretch.

The stretch might stop the hook from being pulled when you have a fish on the line.

Mono wont cut your hand when your lifting something out of the surf.

Mono has more abrasion resistance in mixed heavy ground.

but

Braid shock leader is thinner so more yards on the cast for the distance rod.

Thinner knot good for rod rings, 60lb mono knot is an bit of a monster even with neat knots like double uni.

Braid straight through will be more sensitive and might help, with not belly hooking fish.

 Cant think of anything else but I'm sure there's lots.

I use mono for all of the above reasons but especially for the abrasion resistance over rough ground. If concerned about the the large knot try out a tapered leader, I find them great you don't need to watch your thumb, doesn't get caught on the rod eyes and less weed collecting on the knot its self.

Never ever use braid as a shockleader.
I would not worry about the fingers but a claw hammer would be useful for pulling lead weight out of people’s skulls

Assuming its for normal beach fishing with bait and weight do not use Braid shockleader, if you are talking about plugging / spinning etc might be best to ask the guys in the lure forum for advice.

im a big fan of braid, how thin the line is compared to mono, smooth casting, super bite detection and i like the way it sits real nice in the spool. (fixed)

i use 50lb braid str8 to 5oz lead. just go with the standard rule of 10lb line to each oz of lead, i add 2 feet of mono on the end to give sum stretch will help for crack offs(i dont get any) and wont cut ur hand landing a fishy.

if i go any higher in weight have another reel with same 50lb with 70lb mono leader and up to 8oz weight.

For general shore fishing, braid = less fish
UP THE DEISE!!!!!!!

If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.
