Proposed SAC Rockabill to Dalkey Island

It is worth taking a look at the following link from the department of arts, heritage and the gealtacht which was announced on the 3rd December.

The Rockabill to Dalkey Island reefs includes consent being required to harvest marine invertebrate species in the intertidal areas.

There is a process for objecting to the designation in two stages, stage one-internal review if you have concerns about any restrictions (bait digging) and a second stage which involves the referral of objection to the advisory board.

The deadline for receipt of objections is Tuesday 5th March 2103.

Basically what this means is from 5th of March it will be unlawful for anyone to dig bait in The greater Dublin bait digging areas without a permit.
permits will be next to impossible to attain.
So no bait for anyone from next year.

And the proposal will also include the collecting and removal of peelers, razors and the like.

Were does it say you wont be able to dig bait or collect peelers in Dublin Bay and what would be the penilties if they caught you?

you are right again,
I cant see where or what the penalties are or will be for anyone who collects bait from the shore in the greater Dublin area as nothing is mentioned in the documents that i have.

Most of the Dublin Coastline is designated as SAC or SPA (Special Protection Areas for Birds). None of the listed activities are actually prohibited it's just that consent needs to be sought. Just give the local conservation ranger a call and ask if it' s going to be an issue to dig bait: http://www.npws.ie/media/npws/images/Co ... umbers.pdf

i think the government need some geography lessons,they plan to put a 456 hectares salmon farm in the West Connacht Coast Special Areas of Conservation,its a few years since i was at school but as far as i remember the teachers told me that galway was part of Connacht

I can't for the life of me see how this will be policed because it also has to include foraging, and I know for a fact that some of the lads that forage for winkles in Dublin aren't exactly too worried about authority, but I have to say that in principle I agree with it. I lived and fished in Australia and you can't do anything in New South Wales without a licence. Anglers down there get on fine with the permit system. Having seen Maddie beds, Mussel beds and Crab traps destroyed by anglers I can understand why this might be going ahead. The writing has been on the wall for years now. The marsh area in Malahide was practically destroyed a couple of years ago by bait diggers as was Clontarf. To show how idiotic some anglers are, the area of Clontarf that was dug for Maddies is actually part of a UNESCO heritage area. If this goes ahead, it's going to be very difficult for anglers to put up a good argument when some ( a small minority to be fair), have shown that they don't care at all about the environment they use.

Hopefully this is probably aimed more at the commercial bait diggers and shellfish collectors, rather than the angler out digging a few worms for a session.
