Winter sea fishing, stop or not????
I was just wondering do any folks here stop fishing for winter or do they stop targeting their usual fish. I mainly fish for pollock and wrasse but was just wondering do I lay off them or what???? Is their any unwritten rules???? I know mack arent around and cod come about some areas. But does bass fishing still take place? Genuine question lads so feel free to post. As always its great to hear opinions from all over the country.
Thanks
Thanks
Always CAR! unless its a pollock...!

We switch from clare to cork for the winter to target other species as we find the winter fishing in clare slows up

Winter fishing is the best because it gets rid of the mac bashers and wimps. More room on the beaches..... Bring on the cold..

Re: Winter sea fishing, stop or not????
Time to start targetting cod, whiting, coleys. I would suggest to stay away from rock marks as they can be lethal along with rough seas can be extremely dangerous. Time to find safer marks but not time to pack uo by no means. Darker evenings can tend to through up some nice suprises,
The finest gift you can give a fisherman is to put a good fish back, and who knows if the fish that you caught isn't someone else's gift to you?"

Re: Winter sea fishing, stop or not????
mainly in winter is when i fish ... nothing like that cold breeze hitting your face when wrapped up nice and warm
watching your tip light in the dark and waiting for that hit ....... and most times in peace and quite what more do you want

Re: Winter sea fishing, stop or not????
Just wondering what would be the average size of coalies/whiting/cod you'd catch in places like Greystones during the winter? Never really given it a shot

Mainly all on the small side, but they do provide plenty bites to keep you busy. Early signs are that whiting sizes might be up a bit this winter though:Ddaveyboy wrote:Just wondering what would be the average size of coalies/whiting/cod you'd catch in places like Greystones during the winter? Yeah would normally get them within first 20-30 yards. Lug and mack should be spot on.daveyboy wrote:Cheers, Would you generally cast in close for the coalies? lug and mac do the job?

Re: Winter sea fishing, stop or not????
Sadly, in general the fishing in Clare is very poor during the colder months. Once the cold sets in you can forget about your lures until late next spring. I did get all excited last year when a photo of two nice codling was put up by someone who does most of his fishing in the Shannon, but unfortunately he had a trip to Cork for them.
You will get bass right through on baits, flounder and coalies. Whiting tend to be small pin sized.
So your choices are-
1 Carry on as you are and see what you can find.
2 Travel to the East coast or cork for cod.
3 Take up knitting for the winter.
