Putting Braid On Spinning Reel?

#1 Post by fishy1987 »

Hey Guys,
I was Given a Spool Of 10lb Spiderwire Braid as a present a few days ago and im itching to spool up my spinning reel with it.I have Never used Braid On a Reel Before but i know there is a few different ways of putting it on.

From what i can gather on the internet is to put on Mono first as backing, then attach the braid to that.

What length of Mono should be used and what breaking strain to match the 10lb braid? Also what knots would be the most reliable for this?.

Theres a lot of stuff on the net just wondering if someone might point me in the right direction for what has worked for them?.Can,t wait to use it :D

Hi fishy,

I myself normally load the spool with a bit of mono enough to cover the spool and then a little more it stops the braid from slipping which can sometimes happen.

I tie a Albright knot which should be fine, have a look on the net there's loads of vids on how to tie it or theres an app called Knot Wars which shows animations how to tie various different knots

Hope that helps

Is it not ok just to load the whole spool with braid?

you can but it will slip ,get some duct tape cut it to the size of the spool and apply with no overlap to keep everything neat,it will grip the tape no prob ,alot of beach reels come with braid spools that are very shallow and will take 300 meters of braid and a shock leader the tape trick works a treat ,most people spinning dont chuck more than 100 meters so a mono backing saves wasting braid that will never see the light of day
for loading the reel put the braid on your spare spool fill with mono and swap spools and wind it back onto your good spool  if you dont have a spare then its guess work

I was loading braid straight through...then at the end of the year would take the spare spool and load the braid back onto it...kinda in reverse order so I am using fresh braid if that makes sense?

Thanks A million for the advice! :D :D Job done Delighted!I used the allbright Knot on the Video you mentioned wich was very straightforward :) And also put a layer of tape over the mono knot on the spool before the braid went over it for added security.Dont know if this is done but happy days.

Thanks For the Help Lads
