With recent reports of mullet been caught on lures and other artificials i was just wondering whether its the norm or a strange occurance.I know thin lipped mullet and golden greys will accept a small spinner like bait with a few maddies on the hooks, and you can catch grey mullet using a float and small worm baits and retrieve it slowly. But just wondering about the mullet taking artificials in general[ie bass size lures].
Anytime i used lures etc the shoals of grey mullet would break up or occasionally i may hook up accidently but ive never had one take the lure purposefully.I would have thought a more stealth approach would have been the norm.If anyone has had any regular success using artificials id be very interested to hear as a mullet in my experience are one of the hardest fighting fish apart from a good old mackeral on very light gear.If it does happen regularly its something i will be def looking into.
Tight lines

Re: using artificial baits for mullet.
Have often caught mullet on Dexter Wedge, German Sprat etc but ONLY at spawning time when they become quite aggressive and will attack anything that flashes.
Otherwise never had a hit on a lure.

Re: using artificial baits for mullet.
I had a grey mullet last April on an Asturie, hooked on the outside of the mouth so looked like it was snapping at the lure rather than foul hooked:

Mepps spinners with Power Isome soft plastics on the hook are catching plenty of mullet in the UK so should work well here too..

Interesting stuff.Ive seen dvds of the thin lipped going for the old mepps with a single hook and maddies slowly retrieved back wicked fighters.Maybe some small lures around spawning time whenever that is might be worth a go for the grey mullet or maybe groundbaiting might yield more consistant results.I feel some trial and error fishing coming up again

had one take a gold mepps (plain treble, no rag) last summer...lip hooked. Gonna try the mepps and rag this summer. Could be fun or incredibly frustrating!

Re: using artificial baits for mullet.
They are well known to hit large sea trout flies in the Bann..
I dont see why they couldn`t target them at certain times using lures.....maybe something for me to try this year!!
