Co, Sligo Rock Sessions, The 4 th 6 th & 12 th of July 2011

#1 Post by FisherKing »

People: Myself

Duration: six hours in total

Tide: Stranding & filling

Weather: Sunny warm & a light west – north west wind

Bait: Spinner, Limpet & Lugworm

Rigs: single hook & Weight

Results: July 4th : eight Pollock, July 6th : eleven Pollock, July 12th : seven Ballan & one Corkwing Wrasse

Report:

July 4th
With the break in the weather I was out spinning in the morning at my main mark, it was slow for the first hour but until the fish came on the feed all Pollock around the 2lb mark with the odd big one mixed ended up with eight Pollock & lost at least six more fish, nice morning to be out. Only down side was I left my Mobile phone behind on the rock

July 6th
Decided to try a mark I’ve only fished a hand full of times down through the years the only problem with it is a thirty five minute hike to get to the best spinning platform but said id give it a shot, the walk out wasn’t to bad as it turned into a lovely bright day & conditions were perfect for spinning & from the off the Pollock were hammering the Spinner again alot of fish around the 1-2 lb mark but on the last few casts a fine Pollock jumped on the spinner just missing it  a quick cast back to same spot & bang hooked her & after a great scrap landed a lovely fat Pollock of 6 lb 13 oz 8) happy days.

July 12th
This was an quick early morning Wrasse session at my favourite mark & it didn’t disappoint plenty of Ballan around & one single female Corkwing but the high light was a fine specimen Ballan which took Lug fished in a deep gully just under my feet what a scrap :D First specimen Ballan of the year that hit the scales at 4lb 12 oz a few quick pics & back she went. This mark holds wrasse to over 6lb weight but it’s usually around September & October before the reel Wrasse fishing starts here, roll on 8) & managed to find my phone over a week later, mobile not working but at least I got my sim card back, Happy Days

Some whoppers there Brian, those are beautiful fish. Love the really fat ballan, great colours. That is great quality fishing you have there. Well done on the almost 7lb pollack and a specimen wrasse also. Big fish.

EDIT. sorry, the really fat ballan I refered to is a female Corkwing, I thought it was just a strangely coloured ballan, lovely fish. Striking markings, never saw one before.

Cheers cathal, theres a lot of the corkwing around this mark lately never caught them here before but now the place is full of them & the males are a class looking fish have some lovely markings on them espically around there head & gills if only they grew to the size of ballans.
