Re: ray are they flat or round
I classify all ray and skate as round fish as they have both eyes on the upperside of their body and the mouth on the underside from the first moment in their life unlike true flatfish. Furthermore they are members of the shark family which are all classed round fish. Anglerfish and monkfish are round fish too, despite their bodyshape.

Re: ray are they flat or round
just to get back to original post does ifsa have a ruling on this as it is so confusing that different provinces differ as to weather it is flat or round i mean how can somebody win best round with a ray in leinster and best flat with a ray in munster?

Re: ray are they flat or round
The NFSA and SMAF both class them as round fish. I'm sure if somebody is a bit of biology geek they'd be able to let us know the scientific classification of them. As far as I'm concerned they're round even if they're a little on the flat side.

Re: ray are they flat or round
most of the major competitions at this stage are measuring them nose to tail so in effect they are being treated as round in that sense
they are from the shark family with cartilaginous skeletons rather than bone whereas the true flatties are all bony fish

Re: ray are they flat or round
I thought because they are a member of the shark family or closely related to sharks they are classed as a round fish???
I dont fish matches so it doesnt really matter to me.
............only just read the post above mine, i think you are right corbyeire.

Re: ray are they flat or round
Lads does anybody have an official ruling on this.
as the only reference to ray in the ifsa diary in the general competition regulations section 11 is that. Ray are measured on wingspan for culinary use at 45cm
also it refers to flatfish not a specific species just flatfish as 25cm for culinary use
does this actually seperate the two saying that ray are a roundfish and measured on wingspan not lenght as it is stated that all clubs must observe these measurements not to take one for culinary use under wingspan of 45 cm
i would be grateful of any factual clarification
regards
